Why gaps happen

Tunnels, underground car parks, container stacks, border crossings and rural sections of a route all interrupt the data connection. The satellites may still be visible, but nothing can be sent.

What onboard memory does

VT-301 and VT-302 carry a 64MB memory chip storing 30,000 offline location records. VT-390 has 4MB of memory with a position logging capacity of 26,000+ waypoints even with no GPRS signal. G25 stores data in built in memory and resends once the LTE network is received again.

The buffer on personal devices

Q20 holds 4MB of buffer storage for 8000 GPRS records and 400 SMS records, so a walk through a coverage hole does not erase the track.

Backup power is part of the same problem

A power cut ends reporting just as completely as a coverage gap. VT-301 and VT-302 carry a 500 mAh backup battery and VT-390 a 950 mAh backup battery, and R-18 raises an external power cut alarm.

What to specify

Ask for the record count, not just the phrase offline storage. 30,000 records at a 30 second interval is a different proposition from a few hundred.
