Why The Leather Choice Comes First

Leather decides the look, the price and how the finished product ages. It is the first thing a development team asks about and the last thing a buyer should leave to the factory to decide alone. Before a sample is cut, agree on the grade, the finish and the colour reference in writing.

Full Grain And Top Grain

Full grain keeps the outer surface of the hide, including its natural marks, and develops a patina with wear. Top grain has that surface lightly corrected, giving a more uniform look across a production run. Uniformity matters when a retail chain needs a hundred pairs on a shelf to look identical.

Split Leather And Suede

Split leather comes from the lower layers of the hide after the top layer has been separated. Finished as suede or nubuck it gives a soft surface used widely in casual footwear and in bag panels. It marks more easily than a grain leather, so it suits styles sold as casual rather than formal.

Lining And Sole Considerations

Lining leather is chosen for comfort and durability rather than appearance, and it changes the fit of a shoe as much as the last does. Sole selection is agreed at the same time because a leather that suits a cemented casual shoe may not suit a heavier construction.

What To Confirm Before Sampling

Send a colour reference and, where possible, a physical swatch. Confirm grade, finish, thickness and colour in the specification, and keep the approved sample as the reference for the bulk run. This is the simplest protection against a bulk order that looks different from the pair you signed off.
