Solvent-free Compound / and Solvent-based Dry Composite Technology

How solvent free and dry composite differ in coating control film formation drying and curing and what to specify for laminated packaging.

What Solvent Free and Dry Composite Mean

The difference between solvent free compound and solvent based dry composite is mainly reflected in the formation mechanism of the film and the composite fastness, the coating method, and the function and requirements of each process. For laminated packaging this decides how coating is controlled and when bond strength is actually formed.

How Coating Method Affects Glue Control

Solvent free uses multi roll transfer coating with thin glue and uniform thickness. The coating amount is mainly determined by the rotation speed of each roller and can be adjusted steplessly. Dry composite uses roll coating with a thicker layer that is bump like and uneven in thickness.

How Film Formation and Bond Strength Develop

Solvent free starts with low initial viscosity and film and composite fastness are basically formed outside the machine in the curing process. The film is formed primarily as a chemical process for two component reaction. Dry composite has high initial viscosity after oven heating and strength is mainly formed in the machine.

Why Drying and Curing Requirements Differ

Solvent free needs no drying. One component glue needs to be cooled and two component glue is generally not required to cool. Curing is the critical process because curing temperature and time affect the bicomponent reaction and therefore have a significant impact on composite quality. Dry composite requires drying.

What to Confirm Before You Order

Confirm how coating amount will be set, whether drying and cooling are required, and what curing temperature and time will be used. Dry composite drying is usually high temperature and each section drying temperature and cooling temperature have a greater impact on the composite. State these requirements in the order.

Questions About This Film

How is coating amount adjusted in each process?

In solvent free it is set by the rotation speed of each roller with stepless adjustment. In dry composite it is set by the recessed roller lines and can only be changed by replacing the roller.

Which process gives a thinner and more uniform glue layer?

Solvent free gives a thin and uniform layer by multi roll transfer coating. Dry composite gives a thicker bump like layer with uneven thickness.

When is composite bond strength actually formed?

In solvent free it is basically formed outside the machine during curing by two component reaction. In dry composite it is mainly formed in the machine by drying and pressure.

Does solvent free lamination need drying and cooling?

No drying is needed. One component glue needs to be cooled and two component glue is generally not required to cool.

Why is curing more critical for solvent free?

Curing temperature and time control the bicomponent reaction and have a significant impact on quality. In dry composite curing is usually auxiliary with only a certain impact.
