Walk into any commercial gym and you will see both: rubber flooring under the free weights, foam-style tiles everywhere else. EVA and rubber gym flooring solve different problems, and choosing wrong is expensive - rubber where you needed cushion, or foam where you needed toughness. Here is the comparison we give buyers.
The core difference
Rubber (virgin or recycled) is dense, heavy and nearly indestructible - it is designed to protect the floor and the equipment from dropped weights. EVA foam is closed-cell, light and energy-absorbing - it is designed to protect the athlete from falls, impact and fatigue. Once you frame it that way, the choice becomes obvious per zone.

What most gyms actually do
Combine both: rubber under the rack and platform, EVA everywhere else. For home gyms and studios with dumbbells up to ~20 kg, high-density EVA alone is usually enough - our gym mat line runs 20 mm at 150 kg/m³ for exactly this use, with 40 mm commercial grade for heavier loads.
The often-missed factor: subfloor and vibration
In apartments and upper floors, EVA's shock absorption dampens vibration and noise traveling into rooms below - something rubber's density does less well per millimeter. If your neighbors are the problem, foam wins.
