"How many tiles do I need?" is the most frequent question we answer - and the answer starts with tile size. EVA foam mats ship in three main formats, and the format affects packaging, freight cost, installation speed and how cleanly your room dimensions divide. Here is the complete picture.
The three standard formats

The coverage math, step by step
Take a 5 x 4 m home gym: 20 m². Add 8% wastage → 21.6 m². In 60 x 60 tiles: 21.6 ÷ 0.36 = 60 tiles . In 1 x 1 m: 22 tiles. In 30 x 30: 240 tiles. The room divides cleanly by 1 m in this example, so wastage stays low; a 4.3 m wide room would force cuts in every format - one more reason to add the 8% margin rather than ordering exact.
Why tile size changes your freight quote
EVA freight is priced largely by volume , and tile size changes how tightly tiles nest in cartons. 1 x 1 m tiles stack efficiently at scale but the cartons are oversized for small orders; 60 x 60 nests well into standard cartons, which is one reason it became the default; 30 x 30 packs many small pieces, which raises per-piece handling but ships flexibly. When comparing supplier quotes, compare delivered cost per m² , not tile price - packaging density is where hidden differences live.
Installation speed and seams
Fewer, larger tiles mean fewer interlocks to click and fewer seams in the finished floor. A 100 m² commercial floor goes down roughly twice as fast in 1 x 1 m tiles as in 30 x 30. The counter-argument: small tiles are easier to cut around obstacles and cheaper to replace individually - the logic behind 30 x 30 in kids' areas, where a single stained tile is swapped, not the whole floor.
Mixed formats and borders
Many gym floors combine formats: 60 x 60 field tiles with a 1 x 1 m logo zone in the center, or 30 x 30 accent colors at the edges. Because the interlock systems differ between formats, order border strips or transition pieces from the same supplier rather than mixing brands.
