Intarsia vs Jacquard: Choosing a Christmas Knit Construction
Two ways to put a picture into a sweater, with different costs, limits and hand-feel.
Novelty holiday knitwear lives or dies on how the motif is built into the fabric. The construction you choose determines the colour count you can carry, the weight of the finished panel and how the sweater feels against the skin.
The points that matter
- Intarsia: blocks of colour, no floats behind the motif
- Jacquard: repeating pattern carried across the row
- Intarsia suits single large placements
- Jacquard suits borders and all-over repeats
- Colour count drives machine time on both
- Motif scale must be tested on the actual gauge
