Vented Versus Single Layer Canopies
Why the second layer is the difference between a season and a storm
An umbrella inverts because pressure builds under the canopy faster than it can escape, and the ribs travel past the point they were designed to reach. A vent gives that pressure somewhere to go. It is the single most useful thing you can specify on an umbrella that will be used on open ground.
How A Vent Works
The canopy is built with an upper layer overlapping an opening in the lower layer. Air pushed up from underneath escapes through the gap instead of lifting the ribs. The overlap keeps rain out because water falls downward while the pressure travels up.
Vented Versus Double Layer
The terms overlap in practice. A vented canopy has an opening with a cover over it. A double layer canopy carries two full layers with the gap between them. When Single Layer Is Correct
Single layer canopies are lighter, cheaper and fold smaller, and they are the right answer for an umbrella that lives in a bag and is used walking between a car and a door. Our Colour Shaft Auto Open and UV Silver Coating models are single layer for exactly this reason.
What A Vent Does Not Fix
A vent relieves pressure; it does not make a weak frame strong. On a large canopy, a vent over steel ribs still bends. This is why our vented and double layer models all use fibreglass somewhere in the frame.
Specifying It
If the umbrella will be used on a fairway, a terrace, a car park or any open ground, specify a vented or double layer canopy on a fibreglass frame. If it will be carried in a bag for short walks in a city, single layer is the sensible choice.

Does a vent let rain in?
No, when it is built correctly. The upper layer overlaps the opening, so water running down the canopy passes over the vent rather than through it.
Is a double layer canopy heavier?
Yes, it uses more fabric. That is the trade-off, and it is why folding commuter models in the range are mostly single layer.
Can a vent be added to any model?
It is part of the canopy pattern, so it is decided at specification stage rather than added later. Tell us the model and we will confirm.
