What the inch figure on an umbrella specification actually describes
Umbrella sizes are quoted in inches, but the inch figure does not describe the same measurement everywhere, which is why two suppliers can quote 27 inch and deliver visibly different umbrellas. This guide sets out how the figures work across the sizes we build.
The Sizes We Build
Levoo builds canopies at 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 30 and 34 inch. In practice, 21 inch is the folding commuter size, 23 inch is the everyday straight umbrella size, and 27 and 30 inch are the golf sizes.
Inch Figures And Arc Figures
Golf umbrellas are often quoted twice: 23 inch as 46 inch, 27 inch as 54 inch, 30 inch as 60 inch. The first number describes the rib and the second describes the arc across the open canopy. Both describe the same umbrella. When comparing quotes, check which convention the other supplier is using before assuming one canopy is twice the size of the other.
A Worked Example
Our 30 Inch Manual Open Vented Golf Umbrella is specified at 130 cm open diameter with an overall length of 101 cm. Those are the measurements that tell you whether it covers two people and a bag. If a supplier will not give you a centimetre figure, the inch figure alone is not enough to compare.
Choosing By Use Rather Than By Number
A 21 inch three-fold lives in a bag and is chosen because it will be carried. A 23 inch straight umbrella is chosen because it will be kept. A 30 inch golf canopy is chosen because two people have to stay dry. The number follows the use; it should not lead it.
Size And Print Area
Print area scales with canopy size, but so does the size of the panel seams your artwork has to work around. A crest that reads beautifully on a 30 inch canopy may need simplifying at 21 inch, which is a decision to make at artwork stage rather than at delivery.

Is a 27 inch umbrella 27 inches across?
No. On golf umbrellas the inch figure describes the rib, and the arc across the open canopy is the larger figure, quoted as 54 inch for a 27 inch umbrella. Always ask for the open diameter in centimetres if coverage matters.
