How to read a canopy specification without taking it on trust
Canopy fabric is where suppliers quietly differ, because the difference is not visible in a catalogue photograph. This guide explains the terms that appear on our specification sheets so you can compare them against anyone else's.
190T Pongee Polyester
The T number is the thread count. 190T pongee is the standard canopy fabric across most of our range: it takes print well, sheds water reliably and holds its shape after repeated folding. When a specification says only polyester with no thread count, you cannot compare it to anything.
Nylon And Ultra-Light Cloth
Nylon is available as an alternative canopy fabric. Ultra-light cloth is specified where total weight is the constraint, typically on multi-fold formats where the umbrella has to disappear into a bag.
Coatings On The Underside
A silver coating blocks UV and is rated, on our UV Silver Coating Folding Umbrella, at UV30+ or UV50+. A colour coating changes the light under the canopy. A black coating increases shade density and cuts glare. All three go on the underside, so the printed outer face is unaffected.
Function Fabrics
Reflective fabric makes the whole canopy return light, which is a different product from a canopy with a reflective strip sewn to its edge. Cork is a natural material with visible grain variation, used where the umbrella is a gift rather than a tool.
Questions Worth Asking Any Supplier
Ask for the thread count, not just the fibre. Ask whether a coating is on the inside or the outside. Ask what the UV rating is and whether the fabric supplier can document it. If a supplier cannot answer those three, the specification is decoration.

Is a higher T number always better?
It describes a denser weave, not automatically a better umbrella. Frame quality and construction matter more. The reason to ask is that it lets you compare two quotes on the same basis.
Can printed artwork survive on a coated fabric?
Yes. Printing goes on the outer face and the coating sits on the underside, so the two do not interfere.
Which fabric should not be machine washed?
None of them should be. Cork and reflective fabrics in particular should be wiped and dried open rather than washed or ironed.
