Sourcing Agency Or Direct To The Factory
What an agency actually does, what it costs you in margin and control, and when going directly to the manufacturer is the better answer.
What a sourcing agency does
An agency sits between a foreign buyer and Chinese manufacturers, bridging language and cultural gaps and handling the parts of the process a buyer without local presence finds slow. The usual arguments for one are cost savings through negotiation, quality control on the ground, reduced risk, saved time, and access to a wider range of products than a buyer could find alone.
Where those arguments hold
They hold most strongly when you are sourcing many unrelated products, when you have no experience of the market, or when you need somebody physically present and cannot be. An agency that genuinely inspects, genuinely negotiates and genuinely knows the supply base earns its fee in those situations.
Where they weaken
They weaken when you are buying one product category in volume. Then the agency is a margin layer between you and the people who control the production schedule, and every technical question takes an extra hop. If your supplier cannot answer a question about port behaviour or certification directly, you are being quoted by somebody who is asking somebody else.
How to choose an agency if you use one
Experience with a proven record of sourcing from China; a reputation you can check with previous clients; transparency about its sourcing process, fees and communication channels; responsiveness; and industry expertise in your specific category. Transparency about fees is the one to press hardest, because an agency paid by an undisclosed supplier commission is not working for you.
The honest comparison
Going direct means dealing with the factory's own schedule, tooling and quality system, which is faster on technical questions and cheaper on margin, but it requires you to do the evaluation yourself. Using an agency buys you that evaluation and costs you margin and a layer of distance. Neither is universally right. Knowing which one you are actually doing matters more than which one you choose.
