China Manufacturing: The Questions Buyers Actually Ask
Lead times, minimum quantities, payment terms, quality control, intellectual property, packaging and logistics, answered from the factory side.
What can actually be made, and by whom
Chinese manufacturers cover an enormous range, from electronics and textiles to toys and furniture, and operate at every scale from a workshop to a plant employing tens of thousands. That range is why the general question of what can be made in China has no useful answer, and why the specific question, can this factory make this product to this specification, is the only one worth asking.
Lead times and minimum order quantities
Both depend far more on what is being customised than on the product. A published configuration with no tooling change is fast; a new colour, a new print or new packaging each add time. On small accessories the minimum quantity is often set by the printed packaging rather than by the product, because print runs have their own economics.
Payment terms and what they signal
Terms are negotiable and they tell you something. A supplier who will discuss staged payment against milestones is describing a relationship; one who requires everything up front on a first order with no history is describing a risk position. Whatever is agreed, it belongs in the written contract along with everything else.
Quality control, on both sides
Ask what the factory's own process is, then arrange your own verification independently of it. Every product in this range is function-tested before packing, and for a buyer that is a claim rather than evidence until a third-party inspection confirms it. A supplier who welcomes inspection is easier to work with than one who explains why it is unnecessary.
Intellectual property, packaging and logistics
Customised packaging and labelling are routine, and so is producing to a buyer's artwork. Intellectual property protection is a contractual matter that should be settled before drawings are shared, not after. Shipping options run from sea freight to air, with lithium battery products subject to dangerous goods rules that constrain the choice.
Whether quality is a real concern
Products made in China span the full range from very poor to excellent, which is the same range as anywhere else that manufactures at scale. The variable is not the country, it is the factory and the specification you agreed with it. A written specification, an approved physical sample and a pre-shipment inspection answer the quality question far better than any generalisation about origin.
