Why This Exists

The Situation It Addresses

Arc faults come from damaged insulation, ageing cable and loose joints, and neither an MCB nor an RCD is designed to detect them. Our AFDD range detects the arc signature and cuts the circuit. This is the part of the range that came out of the fault arc protection project run with the Yueqing Yangtze River Delta Electrical Engineering Innovation Center.

Process

How It Runs Step by Step

Risk reviewDevice choiceTest provisionInstallationVerificationDocumentation
  1. Risk reviewIdentify circuits with old wiring, flexible leads or high value contents such as archives and stock rooms.
  2. Device choiceSelect the AFDD or AFDD plus RCBO combination that matches the circuit rating and pole count.
  3. Test provisionInclude an arc fault test device so the installation can be proven at commissioning.
  4. InstallationFit on the DIN rail in place of, or in series with, the existing final circuit device.
  5. VerificationTrigger a controlled test arc and confirm the device disconnects.
  6. DocumentationRecord the tested circuits and the device model numbers for the site file.
Outcome

What You End Up With

Circuits most likely to start an electrically ignited fire are protected by a device that reacts to the arc itself, and the installation can be demonstrated to the client with a test device rather than a claim.

FAQ

Questions About This Solution

Which circuits benefit most from an AFDD

Circuits with older wiring, flexible leads or valuable contents, where a series arc at a loose joint would otherwise go undetected.

Does an AFDD replace the RCD

No. They detect different faults. Combination devices exist where both functions are required in one DIN width.

How do we prove the device works at commissioning

Use the arc fault electric test device to generate a controlled arc so the AFDD can be seen to disconnect.

Which standard applies

The arc fault range is stated to IEC62606 at 230V 50Hz.

What ratings are available

Ratings including a 32A adjustable device and a 63A model with 4.5KA breaking capacity are in the range. Send the circuit ratings for the full list.
