Four Stages in the Life of a Pump

Most pump failures are traced back to how the set was installed, how it was started or how it has been run. These four pages cover the practice that keeps a water pump on its duty point.

General guidance for horizontal and vertical centrifugal pumps. It does not replace the instruction manual supplied with your pump. Where the manual and this page differ, follow the manual.
The Short Version

Five Rules That Prevent Most Failures

Never Run Dry

The mechanical seal is lubricated by the pumped liquid. Seconds of dry running can destroy it.

Never Throttle the Suction

Control on the discharge side. Throttling the suction lowers the available NPSH and starts cavitation.

Stay Near the Duty Point

Running far below or far above the design flow loads the shaft, the bearings and the seal.

Align After Piping

Connect and support the pipework first, then align the coupling. Piping strain moves the pump.

Record the Baseline

Pressure, flow, current, bearing temperature and vibration on day one. Every later reading is compared against it.

Watch the Seal

Visible leakage from a mechanical seal, or a dry gland on a packed pump, is the first warning you get.

FAQ

Service Questions

Do you supply an instruction manual with the pump

The pump is supplied with its documentation. Where the manual and these pages differ, follow the manual.

Can you help with a pump that is not performing

Send the readings — suction and discharge pressure, flow, motor current, bearing temperature — along with the pump series and size.

Do you supply spare parts for older pumps

Send the series, the size and the part and we will confirm what is available.

Need Help With a Pump on Site

Send the series, the size and the readings you have and we will work through it with you.
