Silicone and Gel Footcare Materials Guide

Two materials that look identical in a photograph

Footcare gel products are made either from medical grade silicone or from a much cheaper PVC based gel. In a listing image they are indistinguishable. On a shelf, after six months, they are not: PVC gel hardens, yellows and develops a slightly tacky surface, while medical grade silicone stays soft and clear.

This matters more in footcare than anywhere else because the product is often bought once and kept in a drawer. The customer's experience is not of the product you shipped, it is of the product after six months of storage.

Hardness is a specification, not a preference

Gel hardness is measured on a Shore scale and it should appear on the specification sheet. Two products from the same mould in different hardnesses are genuinely different products: a soft toe separator is comfortable for hours, a firm one is uncomfortable within minutes and gets a one star review.

Running the same shape in two hardnesses is the cheapest way to build an entry item and a premium item in the same range, because the tooling cost is already paid.

Fabric sleeves change the product entirely

A bare gel ring slides inside a shoe. The same gel pad set into a knitted fabric sleeve stays where it is put and can be worn all day. If your customer is on their feet, specify the sleeve version even though it costs more, because a product that migrates inside a shoe will be returned.

Claims are a regulatory question, not a marketing one

Corrective, therapeutic and medical claims on footcare packaging are regulated differently in every market. Decide what your market allows before artwork is laid out, and give the supplier the approved text rather than asking them to write it. A responsible supplier will refuse to print a claim they cannot support.
