PFC Free Water Repellent Finishes and What Changes
Why buyers are moving away from fluorinated repellents and what to expect in wear and care.
What the finish does
A durable water repellent finish sits on the outer face of the fabric and makes water bead rather than soak in. It is not what makes a garment waterproof. That is the membrane or coating underneath. The repellent finish stops the face fabric wetting out, which is what makes a shell feel heavy and cold even when it has not leaked.
Why PFC free
Fluorinated chemistry performs well and persists in the environment, and it is increasingly restricted on brand substance lists. PFC free finishes avoid that class of chemistry. Where our specifications record a PFC free coating, it is stated in the product specification table.
What changes in wear
PFC free finishes generally shed water well but tend to lose surface performance sooner against oils and repeated abrasion. The practical difference for the end user is more frequent reproofing rather than a different level of protection.
Care instructions worth printing
Wash on a gentle cycle without fabric softener, then reactivate the finish with low heat where the care label allows. A garment that appears to leak at the shoulders is usually a wetted-out face fabric rather than a failed membrane.

No. The water column comes from the membrane or coating, not from the surface finish.
Can you supply PFC free on any style?
It is stated on the styles where the specification records it. For other styles, confirm by email before you specify it.
