Before the Engine Comes Apart
Record the engine code from the block, the vehicle model and year, and the numbers on the head and any part already replaced. Measure the bore and the crank journals if the engine can still be turned. Ordering starts from measurements, not from an assumption about what is worn.
The Core Rotating Parts
Pistons, connecting rods and the crankshaft are ordered against the OEM numbers for the engine family, and the sizes have to agree with the measurements taken. A shaft already ground undersize on a previous rebuild is the usual reason a workshop ends up needing a replacement crankshaft rather than a regrind.
The Head and Valve Train
A head that is cracked or skimmed out is replaced rather than repaired. Camshafts, inlet and exhaust valves are listed separately, and a worn camshaft lobe means the matching follower is replaced too. The head gasket and head bolts are ordered with the head, not afterwards.
Everything That Seals or Filters
Head gasket, valve stem seals, oil and fuel filters and the thermostat belong on the same order. These are cheap next to the labour of opening the engine again, and they are the parts most often left until last and then delaying the rebuild.
Ordering in One Shipment
Every reference in this checklist can be ordered at one piece minimum and consolidated into a single shipment, which is what keeps a rebuild on schedule instead of waiting on three separate suppliers.
