EVA Foam Mat Certifications Explained: EN71, REACH, GRS, BSCI and ISO
What EN71, REACH, SGS, GRS, BSCI and ISO 9001 actually certify on an EVA foam mat — and which certificates your market and channel really require.

Certification names get thrown around in every EVA mat quote: EN71, REACH, SGS, GRS, BSCI, ISO… They are not interchangeable — each one answers a different question. This guide explains what each certificate actually covers, who issues it, and which ones your market and sales channel really require.
Product safety certificates
EN71 (European toy safety standard) — applies when mats are sold as children's products in the EU. EN71-3 specifically limits the migration of 19 heavy elements. If you are importing play mats into Europe, this is non-negotiable.
REACH (EU chemical regulation) — restricts substances including phthalates, certain flame retardants and, for foams, formamide. REACH compliance means the finished mat has been tested against the restricted substances list. Both our EN71 and REACH reports are downloadable on our certificates page.
Quality and environmental management systems
ISO 9001 certifies that a factory runs a documented quality management system — process control, traceability, corrective actions. ISO 14001 covers environmental management. These tell you the factory is consistently run, not that one specific batch is safe. We hold both.
Sustainability: GRS
GRS (Global Recycled Standard) verifies recycled content in the product — for EVA mats, typically post-industrial EVA waste re-foamed into new tiles — plus chain-of-custody documentation and social/environmental processing requirements. GRS is increasingly requested by European retailers with sustainability targets. Our current GRS certificate is valid through 2026.
Social compliance: BSCI
BSCI is a factory social-compliance audit — working hours, wages, safety. It is not about the product at all; it is about the people making it. Large European buyers and brands almost always require a valid BSCI report before placing orders. Our factory passes BSCI audit.
