What Pixel Pitch Actually Means
Pixel pitch is the distance in millimetres between the centres of two adjacent pixels. It determines the closest viewing distance at which the image appears seamless. A smaller pitch means more pixels per square metre and a sharper image at closer distances. The choice is not about resolution alone, but about the physical space between the viewer and the screen.
When Small Pitch Is Required
For indoor fixed installations where viewers are within 2 to 5 metres, such as retail stores, conference rooms or studio backdrops, pitches of 0.9mm to 1.8mm are used. MASTARLED's Indoor Fixed With 16:9 Ratio (0.9mm) and Indoor Fixed With High Definition (1.25mm) are designed for these close-viewing environments. P1.2 and P1.5 are common in these applications.
See the Indoor Fixed With 16:9 Ratio specification for the figures quoted above.
When Larger Pitch Is Acceptable
For outdoor installations or large venues where viewers are 5 metres or more away, such as stadiums, billboards or building facades, pitches from 3mm to 10mm are standard. MASTARLED Block Series outdoor cabinets (3.076, 4, 5, 6.67, 8, 10mm) and Outdoor Fixed With High Definition (2.5mm) are built for these conditions. P2.5, P3.91, P4, P6 and P10 are typical in such projects.
The Trade-Off Between Clarity and Cost
A smaller pixel pitch increases the number of LEDs per square metre, which raises the cabinet cost and power consumption. P1.2 and P1.5 cabinets are more expensive per square metre than P4 or P6. The decision must balance image quality against budget and viewing distance.
How to Match Pitch to Content Source
For content that is 16:9 ratio, such as broadcast or video playback, a screen with a native 16:9 pixel pitch (like P1.2, P1.5, P2.5) avoids cropping or scaling. MASTARLED's Indoor Fixed With 16:9 Ratio and Outdoor Fixed With High Definition are designed to match 16:9 sources without distortion.
Transparent Screens Require Special Consideration
Transparent glass screens use a lower pixel density to maintain visibility through the screen. Pitches of 2.5mm, 3.91mm, 7.8mm and 10.4mm are used. The larger the pitch, the more transparent the screen appears, but the image becomes less sharp. P3.91 and P7.8 are common for storefronts and building glazing.
How to Decide Before You Order
Measure the minimum viewing distance. If it is under 3 metres, consider 0.9mm to 1.8mm. If it is 5 metres or more, 3mm to 10mm is sufficient. Confirm whether the content is 16:9 and whether the screen must be transparent. Send the project drawing and viewing distance on WhatsApp and we will confirm the best pitch for your application.
