What The Grade Designation Actually Tells You
The letter S means structural steel. The number 355 is the minimum yield strength in megapascals at a 16 mm test thickness, so S355 yields at 355 MPa minimum.
The suffix indicates the impact test requirement, not a quality level. JR requires 27 J longitudinal Charpy V-notch impact at +20 degrees C. J0 requires 27 J at 0 degrees C. J2 requires 27 J at -20 degrees C. K2 requires 40 J at -20 degrees C.

Supply Condition Codes You Will See On The Certificate
The same yield strength can arrive in different metallurgical conditions. The code after the grade defines the treatment and impact capability. Confusing these conditions is a common reason a plate passes chemistry but fails at site inspection.
- +AR as rolled
- +N normalized or normalized rolled
- M thermomechanically rolled, impacts to -20 C
- ML thermomechanically rolled, impacts to -50 C
- Q quenched and tempered, impacts to -20 C
- QL and QL1 quenched and tempered to -40 C and -60 C

How To Choose Between JR J0 And J2
Base your selection on the lowest service temperature the structure will experience, not the ambient temperature during fabrication. A structure used in winter, even if built in a temperate climate, requires J2.
If the drawing does not specify an impact requirement, confirm it before purchase. Substituting JR for J2 is acceptable only with engineering approval and may result in rejection at inspection.

Is S355J2 stronger than S355JR?
No. Both have the same 355 MPa minimum yield strength. The difference is impact toughness: J2 is tested at -20 degrees C, JR at +20 degrees C.
Can S355JR be substituted for S355J2?
Not without engineering approval. If the drawing calls for J2 the structure is expected to hold toughness at low temperature, and JR is not qualified for it.
What thickness range can you supply?
5 to 150 mm, in widths from 0.6 m to 3 m and lengths of 6 m, 12 m or customised.
Do you cut plate to size before shipping?
Yes. Laser, plasma and CNC cutting are available, which saves shop time when the part geometry is already fixed.
What testing is carried out?
Chemical analysis, mechanical testing, ultrasonic testing and retests where required, with results issued on the mill certificate.
How is the plate packed for sea freight?
Standard sea packing, bundled with steel strip, with marking arranged to suit the destination port.
