Why a wig maker needs a corked block and a shop window needs a PVC head, and what each one can and cannot do.
These two products look similar in a catalogue and do completely different jobs.
A PVC head is moulded, finished and made up to be looked at. It carries a wig, hat, scarf or glasses in a window, on a counter or in front of a camera. The surface is smooth and takes make-up well, and weights run from about 1 kg to 2.25 kg so the head stays put on a shelf. What it will not do is take a pin.
A canvas block head has a cork core under a canvas cover, which is what lets a T-pin go in and hold. Ventilating a lace front, sewing wefts, setting and drying a wig — all of it needs a head you can pin into. Our block heads are supplied at 21 to 25 inch head circumference to suit different cap sizes.
The PU head sits between the two. At around 1 kg it is lighter to handle than a PVC head of the same size, which suits training rooms and workshops where heads are moved constantly.
Buy the PVC head for anything the customer sees. Buy the canvas block head for anything the wig maker touches. Most of our customers who make and sell wigs order both from the same shipment, which keeps freight and paperwork to one supplier.
