A hotel or duty-free desk does not get to choose which document arrives. The EPP201 is specified as a multi-function unit: e-passport scanner, half-page passport OCR scanner, visa MRZ scanner, contact ID card reader and contactless ID card reader, all in one desktop housing.

Its OCR works on any ICAO 9303 document — passport, visa or ID card. Contactless smart cards compliant with ISO14443 and 7816 are supported, as are contact smart cards to ISO/IEC 7816 Parts 1 to 4 (T=0, T=1) and ISO1801 standard driver licences.
