Cotton And Polycotton Bedding Compared

How cotton and polycotton blends differ in feel, drying time, creasing, durability and cost, and which one suits contract use against retail.

Nearly every bedding brief eventually reduces to one question: pure cotton or a polycotton blend. The honest answer is that they are good at different things, and the right choice depends on who is doing the laundry.

What The Blend Actually Changes

Cotton absorbs moisture, feels cooler against the skin and gets softer with washing. It also creases hard, dries slowly and shrinks on the first few washes unless the cloth has been pre shrunk.

Polyester does the opposite. It holds its shape, resists creasing, dries fast and costs less. It also traps heat and feels slicker, which is why very few people want to sleep under pure polyester.

A blend is a trade. A 50/50 blend creases far less and dries much faster than pure cotton, at a real cost in how it feels. A cotton rich blend keeps more of the handle and gives up some of the easy care.

Contract Use Usually Argues For A Blend

In a hotel, bedding is washed, dried and pressed by people paid by the hour. Drying time and ironing time are real costs on every cycle, repeated hundreds of times, and a blend cuts both.

A blend also holds its dimensions better through repeated hot washing, which matters more than it sounds. Linen that shrinks unevenly stops fitting the beds, and a housekeeping team fighting a cover onto a duvet every morning is a real operational cost.

Retail Usually Argues For Cotton

A retail customer washes bedding at home, dries it slowly and is buying on how the fabric feels in the shop. Pure cotton wins on both counts, and the creasing that a hotel laundry manager hates is something a domestic customer simply accepts.

Cotton also takes reactive printing and dyeing better, so prints look deeper and last longer through washing. On a printed range, that difference is visible on the shelf.

Thread Count Is Not The Measure You Think It Is

Thread count became a marketing number, and once it did, it stopped being a reliable measure of anything. Counts can be inflated by counting plies in a multi ply yarn, so a cloth claiming a very high count can be made from thin weak yarns twisted together.

Yarn count, weave and finishing tell you more. A well made percale in a modest thread count outlasts and outperforms an inflated sateen. If a supplier leads with thread count and cannot tell you the yarn count, that is informative in itself.

How To Decide Without Guessing

Write down who launders the bedding, at what temperature, how often, and whether it is ironed. Then ask for the same design in two constructions and wash both twenty times before committing to a programme.

Twenty domestic washes takes a fortnight and settles an argument that otherwise runs for the life of the contract.

Questions

Questions From This Guide

Is pure cotton always better?

No. It feels better and it creases and dries worse. In a commercial laundry that trade is often not worth making.

What blend ratio is most common in contract bedding?

Blends around half and half are common because they cut drying and ironing time significantly. Cotton rich blends keep more of the handle.

Does polycotton pill?

It can, depending on the yarn and the finish. Ask for a pilling test result on the specific construction rather than on the fibre type.

Can the same design be run on both?

Yes. The print or weave design is separate from the base cloth, so one design can serve a retail range and a contract range.
