Why Work Lamps Fail on Vibrating Machines

Vibration Reaches the Solder Joints First

An engine, a hydraulic pump and a track or drivetrain put continuous vibration into every bracket on the machine. The lamp body usually survives it. What fails is the solder on the driver board, the connector pins, and the bracket bolts. Shock rated models are tested against this specifically, which is why the newest Dantech work lamp series lists a 50G shock resistance figure on the spec sheet.

Heat Is the Second Cause

LEDs do not usually burn out; they degrade and dim as junction temperature rises. A die-cast aluminium housing is a heat sink as much as an enclosure, and blocking the fins with mud or mounting the lamp hard against a panel removes the path the heat needs. Over-temperature protection reduces drive current before damage occurs, which shows up as a lamp that dims under sustained use rather than one that fails.

Water Follows the Cable Not the Lens

When a sealed lamp fills with water, the entry point is more often the cable gland or a damaged cable than the lens seal. Cable routed so that it hangs below the lamp gives water somewhere to drip away. Cable routed upward into the gland gives it a path in.

Electrical Faults That Look Like Lamp Faults

Voltage spikes from an alternator, a jump start or an inductive load kill drivers that have no over-voltage protection. On battery trucks the supply can sit well outside the nominal figure. Check the operating voltage range on the spec sheet against the real system voltage before blaming the lamp.
