ISO 13485 Covers the Supplier Quality System Not Market Registration
ISO 13485:2016 is a quality management system standard written specifically for medical device manufacturers. The standard itself requires a certified manufacturer to hold documented processes for design control, risk management, supplier evaluation, traceability and corrective action, which is what the certificate attests to. It does not mean the products are registered in the United States, Europe, or any other market. It does not equate to CE marking, FDA clearance, 510(k), MDR, or UKCA status.
What ISO 13485 Means for Your Sourcing Process
When you source from a factory with ISO 13485 certification, you gain access to a documented quality system that ensures consistency in materials, construction, and packaging. This means repeat orders are built to the same process, with the same controls on materials, workmanship, and final inspection. It supports your own compliance efforts when you sell to regulated markets.
ISO 13485 Requires Documented Processes for Medical Device Manufacturing
The standard mandates that every stage of production—cutting, sewing, bonding, assembly, packaging—follows written procedures. This includes calibration records, material traceability, and batch records. These documents are available upon request and support your audit trail when you are required to prove supplier compliance.
ISO 13485 Does Not Guarantee Product Performance or Safety
The certification applies to the management system, not the product. It does not confirm that a specific product will perform as intended in clinical use. It does not replace testing, clinical evaluation, or market-specific regulatory submissions. You must evaluate product design, materials, and intended use independently.
ISO 13485 Certification Supports Your Own Compliance Requirements
If you are a distributor or brand owner selling orthopaedic soft goods in regulated markets, having a supplier with ISO 13485 certification helps you meet your own obligations under local regulations. It provides evidence that the factory has a system in place to manage quality, which you can reference during audits.
How to Use the Certification When You Place an Order
When you send a purchase order, include your brand’s requirements for documentation. Da Gao can provide the quality system manual, process flow diagrams, and internal audit reports as part of the supplier file. These are not included in standard shipments but are available on request.
