Start With Axle Count and Load Rating Before Any Suspension Choice
A 3-axle trailer rated for 40 tons is not the same as a 3-axle trailer rated for 60 tons. The axle load rating determines the legal weight limit and the required chassis strength.
Before selecting leaf spring or air suspension, confirm the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and the axle load per axle. Exceeding any axle's load limit voids the suspension warranty and risks structural failure.
Leaf Spring Suspension Is Not a Cost Cut If You Run Over 40 Tons
Leaf spring suspension is standard on trailers up to 40 tons, but it does not handle repeated overloads well. For 40-60 ton trailers, especially with frequent loading cycles, leaf springs increase fatigue on the frame and reduce service life.
If your payload exceeds 40 tons, consider mechanical suspension or air suspension even if the base price is higher. The difference in maintenance cost over two years often offsets the initial price gap.
Air Suspension Requires a Compressor and Air Lines, Not Just a Higher Price Tag
Mechanical or air suspension trailers require a compressed air system. If the trailer is used in a fleet with other vehicles, ensure the air supply system is compatible with the tractor's compressor.
For trailers with air suspension, confirm whether the air lines and fittings are pre-installed and whether the trailer has a pressure regulator and quick disconnects for maintenance.
