Three Things a Brushless Motor Does Better

No brush, no spark, less interference

The most immediate change from removing the brush is that there is no spark during operation. That greatly reduces interference with radio equipment on board — which matters if the boat carries VHF, a fishfinder, or a wireless control link.

Lower noise, smoother running

With no brushes there is far less friction in operation. The motor runs more smoothly and the noise is much lower, which is the whole point on a fishing boat or in a quiet anchorage.

Long life, low maintenance cost

Wear moves from the brush to the bearings. Mechanically a brushless motor is close to maintenance-free — occasional cleaning is the whole of it.

The trade-off is honest: a brushed motor has excellent low-speed torque characteristics that a brushless motor achieves differently. What has changed is cost. As brushless controller costs have fallen, brushless power systems have moved from specialist to standard.
