Why Air Intake Hoses Crack and What to Check First
Intake ducts fail in a small number of predictable ways. Knowing them turns a guessing game into a two-minute inspection.

An intake duct has an easy job on paper: carries filtered air from the airbox to the turbocharger inlet or throttle body. In practice it does that while being heat-soaked from below, flexed by the engine on its mounts and pulled at by the airbox at the other end. When it gives up it does so in ways that are easy to recognise.
Four Failure Modes
- Splits along the convolutions —the fold roots carry the flex. A split there is often invisible until the section is squeezed by hand.
- Hardened cuffs —heat-aged ends stop conforming to the spigot, so the joint leaks even with a correct clamp.
- Cracks at moulded sensor ports —the stiff transition between a port and the flexible wall concentrates stress.
- Torn bellows at the engine side —where the duct absorbs the largest movement.
What the Driver Reports
Unmetered air entering downstream of the mass airflow sensor produces unmetered air downstream of the mass airflow sensor, a rough idle and airflow fault codes. On turbocharged platforms the same leak shows up as sluggish response before it shows up as a fault code.
The Two-Minute Inspection
Flex every convolution by hand
Splits open under flex and close at rest.
Squeeze the cuffs
A cuff that has gone hard will not re-seal, whatever you do with the clamp.
Check around every moulded port
Sensor and breather ports are where cracks start.
Look for oil softening
Oil mist from the crankcase circuit attacks some compounds and leaves the wall spongy.
Choosing the Replacement
Match the bellows pitch, the connector geometry and the sensor port position. Outline alone is not enough on these platforms —see Air Intake Hoses and Pipes for the published range, or Air Intake Hose for Mercedes-Benz and Air Intake Hose for Audi for the deepest coverage. A representative reference is Air Intake Hose Pipe for Mercedes-Benz OEM 2700900282.
Large-bore ducts with a steel helix need one extra check on arrival: a duct crushed in transit has lost the structure that keeps it open under intake depression and should be rejected at goods-in.

Why Air Intake Hoses Crack and What to Check First —Questions
Can a cracked intake duct be repaired with tape
Not durably. The wall flexes through every engine cycle and tape debonds. It is a get-home measure, not a repair.
Why does the fault come back after a new mass airflow sensor
Because the sensor was not the fault. An air leak downstream of it produces the same symptoms and the same codes.
Do intake ducts have a service life
They are wear items, not lifetime parts. Heat, oil mist and flex age them whether or not the vehicle is driven hard.
Is a universal silicone hose a good substitute
No. These ducts carry moulded connector geometry and sensor ports that a cut length cannot reproduce.
What material should the replacement be
Match the original. TEEE, PA66 and reinforced composite all appear on intake ducts, and they are not interchangeable.
