Breaking strength and rated working load are not the same number, and selling a strap on the larger one is how loads end up unsecured.
Breaking strength is the point at which the assembly fails in a test. Rated working load is the figure the strap may be used at. Across the Umax Tools range the working load is half the breaking strength: 1000kg breaking and 500kg working on the 50mm and 38mm straps, 500kg breaking and 250kg working on the 25mm strap, 200kg breaking and 100kg working on the 18mm strap.
The 50mm x 4.5m and the 38mm x 4m straps carry the same 500kg rated working load. The wider strap spreads the load over more surface, but the rating comes from the whole assembly including the ratchet and the hooks. Always read the label rather than the webbing width.
J type hooks are fitted to the 500kg straps and S type hooks to the 250kg and 100kg straps. The hook has to match the anchor point on the trailer or rail, or the strap cannot be seated safely whatever its rating.
An automatic ratchet takes the strap tail back into the mechanism. A loose tail at road speed abrades against the load and the vehicle, and is the most common reason a strap is retired early.
