Patch sizes in a supplier catalogue are measured across the widest point of the design. Getting that convention right prevents most sizing disputes.
The Measuring Convention
Our catalogue measures a patch width across the widest point of the design and height from the top to the bottom of the design. The backing edge is not part of the measurement. Confirm your supplier uses the same convention before comparing quotes.
Size To The Panel Not To The Artwork
Artwork is drawn without a garment around it. Print the design at full size, cut it out, and put it on the actual panel before choosing a size. A motif that looked balanced on screen is frequently too large on a childrenswear chest and too small on an adult back panel.
One Design Several Sizes
Detail does not scale down indefinitely. Fine lines that read at four inches disappear at one inch. When one design has to run across several garment sizes, expect to simplify the small version rather than shrink it.
Leave Room For The Border
An embroidered border adds a few millimetres on each side. If the patch has to fit inside a pocket or a yoke panel, quote the outer dimension rather than the design dimension.
Check The Curve
A patch that sits over a seam or a curved panel will not lie flat if it is rigid and large. Either move it, split it, or specify a softer backing.
