How To Choose Lace Trim For Garment Production
Five decisions separate a lace trim that runs cleanly through a production line from one that causes rework: fibre, stretch, edge finish, width and reorderability.
Start With The Seam Not The Pattern
Designers choose lace by how it looks. Production chooses it by where it sits. A trim on a structured neckline needs a rigid lace that holds the cut length, while a trim on a waistband needs stretch and recovery. Decide the seam first and the shortlist of patterns narrows on its own.
Fibre Decides Drape
Cotton lace is crisp and predictable under the presser foot. A rayon and cotton blend adds sheen and drape, which matters when the shell fabric is fluid and a stiff trim would stand away from it. Neither is better in the abstract, they are answers to different fabrics.
The Edge Finish Is A Design Decision
An eyelash lace ends in loose fringe threads and gives a soft hem. A bound edge gives a defined line. On childrenswear, a fringe can catch, so a bound edge is usually the safer specification.
Width Has To Match The Pattern Piece
A lace two millimetres wider than planned changes the finished length of a cuff. Confirm the finished width on a physical sample before the pattern is cut, and measure the way your supplier measures, across the widest point of the design.
Buy Codes Not Rolls
The most common trim failure is not quality, it is that a pattern bought from market stock cannot be found again. Buying against an item code means a repeat order reproduces the same pattern instead of the closest available substitute.
Questions From This Guide
Which lace should I use on a stretch waistband
An elastic lace, so the trim recovers with the garment and you avoid a separate elastic layer underneath.
How do I match lace colour to my fabric
Send a physical swatch of the shell fabric to the trim supplier and have the match confirmed on a sample rather than on screen.
Can lace width be customised
It depends on the pattern. Send the finished width you need and ask which patterns can be produced to it.
