The Problem With A Twisted Joint
A twisted and taped joint depends entirely on the person who made it. Two installers produce two different connections from the same conductors, and neither can be inspected once the tape is on. Over time the joint relaxes, resistance rises, and the fault that follows appears somewhere else in the circuit. Nothing about the method is repeatable, which is why it survives mainly out of habit and cost.

The connector choice is only half the question, because a joint outdoors or in a damp position needs an enclosure regardless of how good the connector is.
