Importing Electrical Products Under Your Own Brand A Practical Checklist

The order of operations that keeps an own-brand programme from stalling between the first quotation and the first container.

Decide What The Brand Is For Before Choosing Products

An own-brand range that tries to cover everything ends up with capital tied into items that never move. Decide first whether the brand exists to defend a category you already sell well, or to open one you do not. That answer determines whether the first order is deep in a few lines or shallow across many, and it is much cheaper to make that decision before sampling than after.

Own Brand And Private Label Program

Confirm Specifications Before Artwork

The expensive mistake is to design packaging around a specification nobody confirmed. Get dimensions, ratings and materials in writing for each item first. Where a figure is not documented, treat it as unknown rather than assuming the catalogue is right, and ask for it explicitly. Artwork built on an unconfirmed specification has to be redone, and by then the print run is usually committed.

Specification And Selection Support

Understand What Each Product Can Physically Carry

Marking is not uniform across a range. A steel distribution board enclosure can take a curved or printed logo and a chosen powder coat colour. A coiled tape carries colour and brand differently. A small connector may have no usable surface at all. Ask product by product what the mark will look like, rather than assuming one artwork file serves the whole order.

Sample The Branded Product Not The Plain One

A plain sample tells you about the product. A branded sample tells you about your brand, which is what you are actually buying. Colour shifts on a powder coated surface, print legibility at small sizes and how the mark survives handling are all things you can only judge on the finished item. Approve from the branded sample and keep it as the reference for repeat orders.

Own Brand And Private Label Program

Plan The First Container As A Mix

A first own-brand container almost never justifies a full load of one category. Mixing tools, enclosures, protection devices and lighting lets you test several lines at quantities you can absorb if one of them is wrong. It also means the fast movers subsidise the learning curve on the rest.

Mixed Container Sourcing

Write Down What Was Approved

Own-brand programmes go wrong at the second order more often than the first, because the reference for what was approved lives in one person's memory. Keep the approved sample, the confirmed specification and the artwork file together, and place repeat orders against them explicitly.

FAQ

Questions On This Topic

How do we start an own-brand enquiry?

Send the category list you want to cover, your target quantities and your artwork. We will mark which items are stock lines, which need a custom run, and what each one can carry as a mark.

Can we brand only part of the order?

Yes. Buyers commonly brand the lines they are building a range around and take the rest as standard, all in one container.

Which products give the most branding scope?

The metal distribution board is the most configurable, with sheet thickness, cover colour, powder painting colour, knockout layout and a curved or printed logo. Fish tapes and cable pullers list customisable colour, brand and length.
