Voltage Drop and Run Length
Voltage drop occurs when the electrical resistance in the strip reduces the voltage reaching the far end. This causes dimming or colour shift in the last section of the strip.
For 12V strips, voltage drop becomes noticeable beyond 5 meters in high-density configurations. For 24V strips, the same issue appears beyond 10 meters under similar conditions.
When to Choose 12V
12V strips are suitable for short runs under 5 meters, especially in low-power applications such as under-cabinet lighting, display cases, or accent lighting in tight spaces.
They are compatible with standard low-voltage power supplies and dimmers commonly used in residential and small commercial installations.

When to Choose 24V
24V strips are recommended for runs over 5 meters, particularly in commercial or architectural applications such as cove lighting, signage, or large retail displays.
The higher voltage reduces current for the same power, minimizing voltage drop and allowing longer continuous runs without visible dimming.
Driver and Power Supply Compatibility
12V strips require drivers with output matching the strip’s input voltage and sufficient current capacity. Standard 12V drivers are widely available and cost-effective.
24V strips require 24V drivers. These are common in commercial lighting but less common in consumer-grade setups. Ensure the driver supports the strip’s total power draw.
Power Consumption and Current Draw
For the same number of LEDs, 12V strips draw twice the current of 24V strips at the same power. This affects wire gauge and connector sizing.
Higher current in 12V systems increases resistive losses and requires thicker wiring or shorter runs to maintain performance.

Questions on This Topic
What is the maximum run length for 12V LED strip?
Voltage drop becomes noticeable beyond 5 meters in high-density configurations. For longer runs, 24V is recommended.
Can I use a 24V driver for a 12V strip?
No. Using a 24V driver on a 12V strip will damage the LEDs and the circuit. Always match the driver voltage to the strip’s input voltage.
Is 24V safer than 12V?
24V is not inherently safer. Both are low-voltage systems and considered safe for indoor use. Safety depends on proper installation and insulation.
Do 24V strips need thicker wires?
No, 24V strips draw less current than 12V strips for the same power, so standard wire gauge is sufficient for runs under 10 meters.
Can I cut a 24V strip at 5cm intervals?
Yes. All strips are cuttable at 5cm or 10cm marked intervals without damaging the circuit. Ensure cut points are aligned with the marked lines.
