The Fittings Nobody Prices and Everybody Needs
Insulators and protection equipment get specified carefully because they are expensive. D irons, socket adaptors, stay rods, bolts and clamps get added at the end, and they are the items most often short on delivery. A pole cannot be dressed without them, so a missing fitting costs a crew day in exactly the same way a missing transformer would.
Earth Rods and Why the Electrode Matters
The earth electrode is what gives surge current somewhere to go and what makes the protection system behave as designed. A rod driven into ground with high resistivity, or connected with a long looping lead, produces a measured earth resistance that will not do the job. Depth, soil condition and a short direct connection all matter more than the rod itself.
Stay Assemblies at Angles and Terminations
Wherever the line changes direction or ends, the conductor tension pulls the pole sideways. A stay rod and its anchor transfer that pull into the ground. Getting the stay angle and the anchor depth right is structural work - a stay that is too steep puts more compression into the pole than the designer intended.
D Irons Socket Adaptors and Clamps
These are the interface parts: the bracket that carries the insulator, the adaptor that mates two fitting types, the clamp that secures the conductor or stay wire. Because they are interfaces, they are exactly where a substitution of the nearest similar part causes a problem at height.
Galvanising and Service Life
Pole line fittings are hot dip galvanised because they spend decades outdoors carrying structural load. Damage to the coating during installation - cutting, drilling, grinding on site - is the usual start of the corrosion that eventually loses the fitting, so on-site modification is worth avoiding.

The reliable way to buy fittings is against the pole assembly drawing or schedule, together with the insulators and protection they belong to, with a spares percentage on the consumables. Ordering them as a separate afterthought list is what produces the shortage.
