Ignition Coil Failure and How To Confirm It
Misfire symptoms, the cylinder swap test, and the secondary causes that destroy a new coil within weeks.
Typical Symptoms
A failing coil produces a misfire that is usually worse under load and often worse when the engine is hot, because insulation breaks down as temperature rises. Expect a rough idle, hesitation on acceleration, a flashing or steady engine management light and a measurable drop in fuel economy.
Modern engine management will normally store a cylinder specific misfire code, which narrows the search to one coil immediately.
Confirming the Fault
The standard confirmation is the swap test. Move the suspect coil to an adjacent cylinder, clear the codes and run the engine again. If the misfire follows the coil, the coil is faulty. If it stays on the original cylinder, the fault is the plug, the injector, the wiring or the cylinder itself.
Check the coil boot and spring for carbon tracking, which shows as a fine black line on the insulator. Tracking means the spark has been finding an easier path to earth.
Why New Coils Fail Early
A coil is rarely the root cause. Worn spark plugs with an excessive gap force the coil to generate a much higher voltage, and that stress kills coils. A leaking valve cover gasket that fills the plug wells with oil will destroy a coil boot in weeks. A lean or misfiring cylinder caused by an injector or a vacuum leak stresses the coil in the same way.
Replace the spark plugs with the coils, at the manufacturer's specified gap, and fix any oil ingress before fitting new parts.

Coils are engine specific rather than model specific. Send the reference number printed on the coil body together with the VIN. Where a vehicle uses individual pencil coils, confirm how many you need; where it uses a coil pack, one part covers several cylinders.

Should I replace all coils at once
If the engine has high mileage and one coil has failed on age, replacing the set avoids repeat workshop visits. If the failure was caused by oil ingress on one cylinder, replacing that one and fixing the leak is reasonable.
Do I have to replace spark plugs at the same time
It is strongly advised. Worn plugs are the most common reason a new coil fails early.
Are coils interchangeable between engines that look similar
Not reliably. Order against the number on the coil body and confirm with the VIN.
