Orientation and Magnetization

Anisotropy is locked at the press. Magnetizing is the last step before the part ships.

Sintered NdFeB is anisotropic. The easy axis is set when powder is pressed in a field. Magnetization happens after coating, just before shipment.

  • Isotropic material looks the same in every direction. Anisotropic material has one preferred axis.
  • Unipolar magnetization follows that axis. Multipole patterns (quadrupole, hexapole and others named on the product pages) need a custom fixture and extra cost.
  • Discs are usually axial (through thickness) or radial. Blocks are through thickness or through width / length. Rings can be axial or multipole.
  • The magnetizing field must reach technical saturation or Br and Hcj come in low. Source text describes a tooling field typically several times the magnet’s coercivity, using DC or pulse magnetizers.

If you change magnetization after the first article, say so before we cut the blank. A radial ring is not a re-magnetized axial ring.
