What The Capacity Number Means
Battery capacity is quoted in milliampere hours. A larger number means a larger energy store, but it does not translate directly into runtime, because runtime depends just as much on what the handset does with that energy.
A keypad handset with a small monochrome or small colour display draws far less than a smartphone with a large bright screen, which is why bar phones routinely last days between charges while smartphones last a day.
Why Screen Size Dominates Runtime
The display is usually the largest single consumer of energy in a smartphone. A larger and brighter screen used for longer will flatten a battery faster regardless of capacity.
This is worth explaining at the counter, because a customer who upgrades from a keypad phone to a smartphone and then complains about battery life is comparing two different classes of device.
Charge Cycles And Ageing
Lithium ion cells lose capacity gradually with use. A charge cycle is one full charge worth of energy, which can be made up of several partial charges. After a few hundred cycles a cell holds noticeably less than when new.
Heat accelerates this. Handsets charged in direct sun or left on a hot dashboard age faster, which matters in the climates most of this region sells into.
Charging Ports
Micro USB and USB-C are the two connectors in current use. USB-C is reversible and is now standard on newer devices, while micro USB remains widespread at lower price points and across keypad handsets.
Whichever the handset uses, tell the customer at the point of sale which cable they need, because a mismatched cable is one of the most common reasons a handset comes back as faulty when it is not.
Removable Or Sealed
Many keypad handsets keep a removable battery, which lets a customer carry a spare and lets a shop replace a worn cell over the counter. Most smartphones use a sealed battery instead.
In markets where mains power is unreliable, a removable battery is a genuine selling point rather than a legacy feature.
What To Specify Before Ordering
Ask the supplier for the battery capacity, whether the battery is removable, the charging port type, and what is included in the retail box.
