What The Two Terms Actually Mean

SMD stands for surface mounted device: individual LED packages soldered onto a board in an array. COB stands for chip on board: many small LED dies mounted directly onto one substrate and covered with a single phosphor layer, so the lamp emits from what looks like one continuous surface. Both are LED lighting. The difference is whether the light comes from a row of points or from one area.

SMD Gives More Output Per Watt

Spacing individual packages out across a board spreads the heat, and heat is what limits LED output. That is why the highest-output lamps in our range, the 30 and 36 LED models, are SMD. If the problem you are solving is simply not enough light on dark fabric, SMD is the direct answer.

COB Gives Cleaner Shadows

Several point sources produce several overlapping shadows. Under an SMD array, a presser foot can cast three or four soft shadow edges onto the fabric, and on fine work that is visually confusing even when there is plenty of light. A COB emitter behaves closer to a single source, giving one shadow edge and a smoother pool of light. Operators often describe COB light as softer or easier on the eyes, and this is what they are describing.

Which To Choose For Which Operation

General assembly and high-volume straight stitching on pale fabric: either, and SMD is usually the better value. Dark fabric where raw output is the constraint: SMD, high LED count. Fine work, buttonholes, topstitching, hand-guided operations and inspection where shadow confusion is the issue: COB. When in doubt, sample both on the operation in question.

It Is Not A Quality Difference

There is a persistent idea that one type is inherently better made than the other. It is not so. Both use the same class of LED chips, and in our factory both go through the same 2-hour high-voltage test before shipment. Choose on the light you want, not on a perceived quality ranking.
