Identify The Fitting From The Base

Household sewing machine bulbs come in a small number of fittings and they are told apart by the base. E12 and E14 are screw fittings, the number being the diameter across the thread in millimetres, so E14 is noticeably fatter than E12. B15 is a bayonet fitting: two pins on the side of the base, pushed in and twisted. A customer photographing the base of the old bulb gives you enough to identify it without knowing the machine model.

Why Heat Is The Real Argument For LED

The original incandescent bulbs in these machines sit inside an enclosed housing right next to plastic parts and the operator's hand. They run hot, they fail regularly, and on older machines they can discolour the housing around them. A 1W or 3W LED replacement produces a fraction of the heat for the same or better light, which is why it lasts so much longer in the same confined space.

Choosing Between 1W And 3W

1W replaces a low-output original and is right where the bulb lights the needle area on a domestic machine. 3W is the choice where the customer wants noticeably more light than the machine originally gave, or where the housing lights a wider work area. Both are available in all three fittings in our range.

Check The Housing Clearance

LED bulbs are not always the same shape as the incandescent bulb they replace. In a tight machine housing, a bulb that is a few millimetres longer will not fit behind the cover. It is worth checking the physical length against the original before committing to a quantity, particularly for older machines.

What To Stock At Retail

For a shop serving mixed domestic machines, all three fittings in 1W covers most replacement demand, with 3W in the most common fitting for customers who want more light. Package so the fitting is visible at the shelf, because that is how these are bought.

When A Bulb Is Not The Answer

If the customer's problem is that they cannot see their work rather than that the bulb has failed, a replacement bulb will disappoint them. A clip-on machine lamp or a table light adds light where the machine's own housing cannot direct it, and that is what quilters working dark fabric usually actually need.
