What This Grade Is For
Hydroxyethyl Cellulose for Ceramics is supplied by Yiyuantong Chemical as a binder and plasticiser for ceramic bodies and glazes. The products are widely used in coatings Materials, daily chemicals and other fields. Hydroxyethyl Cellulose is mainly used as the rheological auxiliary of water-soluble products, and is used in toothpaste, shampoo Daily chemical products such as shower gel, hand sanitizer and shoe polish can thicken and prevent the sedimentation of insoluble substances.
Key Benefits
- Gives green strength so parts survive handling between forming and the kiln
- Suspends glaze solids in the tank, keeping coating weight consistent through the day
- Improves plasticity and lubrication for extrusion and pressing
- Burns out during firing, which avoids residue on the fired surface
- Held in stock: 800 tonnes of HEC are carried year round, and confirmed orders ship to the named port within 3 working days
Problems It Solves
- Green bodies that crack or chip before firing because the binder gives no dry strength
- Glaze slip that settles in the dipping tank between shifts
- Extruded profiles that tear at the die because the body is short
- Binder residue that leaves marks after burnout
Application Scenarios
- Glaze and engobe suspension
- Extruded ceramic bodies and honeycomb
- Press granulation binder
- Ceramic tile and sanitary ware production
Who It Is For
- Tile and sanitary ware manufacturers
- Technical ceramics producers
- Glaze and frit suppliers
Technical Features
- Non-ionic backbone, so viscosity survives salt and hard water
- Cold-water soluble, no cooking step needed in the mixing room
- Supplied from 300 to 200000 mPa.s so the grade can be matched to the process
- Molar degree of substitution of 1.8 to 3.0 for biological stability and high transmittance
- Solvent process raises the degree of substitution by 30 to 35 percent against traditional routes

Raw Materials
- High alpha-cellulose refined cotton
- Wood pulp with high cellulose content
- Ethylene oxide
Manufacturing Process
- Alkalisation of refined cotton and wood pulp
- Etherification with ethylene oxide
- Acetone countercurrent washing
- Drying and milling
- 40 mesh screening
- Lot testing and packing
Quality Control
- Every lot is tested in our own laboratory against the customer specification before release
- Third-party verification is available through SGS, which we have worked with on export lots
- Certificate of analysis issued with each shipment; HPLC or NMR data supplied on request
- Acetone countercurrent washing removes process residues before drying and milling
How It Compares
| Polyvinyl alcohol | Cellulose ether dissolves cold and gives suspension as well as green strength |
|---|---|
| Methyl cellulose | HEC is chosen where a non-gelling, cold-water soluble binder is wanted |
Use Guide
- Dissolve in cold water to a stock solution, then add to the slip under agitation
- Screen the slip after addition to remove any undispersed material
- Confirm burnout behaviour on your own firing curve

Hydroxyethyl Cellulose for Ceramics FAQ
Does it leave ash after firing?
It is an organic binder that burns out during firing. Ash content as sulfate is specified at 6.0 percent maximum on the raw powder; confirm against your own firing schedule.
Can the same grade be used for glaze and for body?
Often a lower viscosity grade suits glaze and a higher one suits extrusion. Send both requirements and we will quote the two grades together.
Are you a manufacturer or a trading company?
We are a manufacturer and you are welcome to visit the plant. Our hydroxyethyl cellulose project runs at 5000 tonnes a year on an acetone countercurrent washing process.
What payment terms do you accept?
L/C, T/T, D/A, D/P, PayPal and Western Union. We have worked with China Export and Credit Insurance Corporation for many years.
How fast can you ship?
Stock items are despatched within 5 days of payment. If the grade is not in stock, production and despatch take 7 to 10 days from payment.
