What This Grade Is For
Cement Additive Hydroxyethyl Cellulose is supplied by Yiyuantong Chemical as a water-retention agent and thickener in cement and gypsum based mixes. HEC can be formulated with the ideal low-solid drilling fluid, which provides greater penetration and better drilling stability.
Key Benefits
- Raises water retention so cement can hydrate fully instead of drying out on absorbent block work
- Extends open time, giving crews a longer window to place and adjust tiles or level a coat
- Controls sag on vertical and overhead work through suspension and thickening
- Improves adhesion to the substrate and reduces crack formation on the finished surface
- Held in stock: 800 tonnes of HEC are carried year round, and confirmed orders ship to the named port within 3 working days
Problems It Solves
- Water lost into porous substrates before the binder has hydrated, leaving weak, dusty surfaces
- Shrinkage cracks on skim coats and plasters that dry too quickly
- Tile adhesive that skins over before the tile is placed, so the bond is lost
- Sagging on vertical renders and ceiling plasters
Application Scenarios
- Tile adhesives and grouts
- Plastering and rendering mortars
- Wall putty and skim coats
- Self-levelling and repair mortars
- Gypsum based plaster and joint compound
Who It Is For
- Dry-mix mortar producers
- Wall putty and skim coat manufacturers
- Tile adhesive blenders supplying construction distributors
Technical Features
- Non-ionic backbone, so viscosity survives salt and hard water
- Cold-water soluble, no cooking step needed in the mixing room
- Supplied from 300 to 200000 mPa.s so the grade can be matched to the process
- Molar degree of substitution of 1.8 to 3.0 for biological stability and high transmittance
- Solvent process raises the degree of substitution by 30 to 35 percent against traditional routes

Raw Materials
- High alpha-cellulose refined cotton
- Wood pulp with high cellulose content
- Ethylene oxide
Manufacturing Process
- Alkalisation of refined cotton and wood pulp
- Etherification with ethylene oxide
- Acetone countercurrent washing
- Drying and milling
- 40 mesh screening
- Lot testing and packing
Quality Control
- Every lot is tested in our own laboratory against the customer specification before release
- Third-party verification is available through SGS, which we have worked with on export lots
- Certificate of analysis issued with each shipment; HPLC or NMR data supplied on request
- Acetone countercurrent washing removes process residues before drying and milling
How It Compares
| Starch ethers | Cellulose ether carries the water retention; starch ether is usually added alongside it for anti-sag, not instead of it |
|---|---|
| Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose | HPMC is the usual first choice in cement systems; HEC is used where higher enzyme resistance or a different hydration profile is wanted |
Use Guide
- Blend the powder dry with cement, sand and fillers before water is added; this avoids lumping entirely
- Dose against the dry mix weight and confirm by water retention testing on the final recipe
- Check open time and slip on the actual substrate, not on a glass plate
- Store sealed and dry; the powder is hygroscopic and will cake if bags are left open
Customisation Options
- Viscosity grade selected against your process, from 300 to 200000 mPa.s
- Private label bags printed with your own label content
- Packing sizes arranged to suit your blending line
- Sample shipment by FEDEX, DHL or EMS before a production order
Certification And Inspection
- SGS third-party inspection available on export lots
- Certificate of analysis issued with every shipment
- HPLC or NMR data supplied on request

Cement Additive Hydroxyethyl Cellulose FAQ
How is the dosage decided for a tile adhesive?
It is set by the water retention and open time you need, then confirmed on your own sand and cement. Send us the recipe and we will propose a starting grade and dose for testing.
Does it work in gypsum as well as cement?
Yes. In gypsum it retains water, improves lubrication and gives a slowing effect that solves drumming and early strength problems during application.
Are you a manufacturer or a trading company?
We are a manufacturer and you are welcome to visit the plant. Our hydroxyethyl cellulose project runs at 5000 tonnes a year on an acetone countercurrent washing process.
What payment terms do you accept?
L/C, T/T, D/A, D/P, PayPal and Western Union. We have worked with China Export and Credit Insurance Corporation for many years.
How fast can you ship?
Stock items are despatched within 5 days of payment. If the grade is not in stock, production and despatch take 7 to 10 days from payment.
