Three Jaw and Four Jaw Chucks When to Use Each
Self centring chucks are fast, independent jaw chucks are accurate. Most shops need both, and the reason is geometry rather than preference.

Self Centring Three Jaw
A three jaw scroll chuck moves all jaws together, so round and hexagonal bar is centred in seconds. That speed is why it lives on the machine for most work.
Its accuracy is fixed by the scroll and the jaws, and it wears. Runout of a few hundredths is normal on a used chuck, which is fine for most turning and not fine for a part that has to run true to an existing feature.
Independent Four Jaw
Each jaw moves separately, so the part can be dialled in to whatever accuracy your indicator and patience allow. It also holds square, rectangular and irregular parts that a three jaw cannot grip at all.
The cost is setup time. For a single accurate part that is a good trade; for fifty repeat parts it is not.
Power Chucks and Through Hole
Hydraulic or pneumatic power chucks clamp repeatably at a set pressure, which matters in production and on CNC machines. Large through hole versions let long bar pass through the spindle, which is what bar work requires.
Clamping force must suit the part. Thin walled components distort under high pressure, and the distortion appears as an out of round bore after the part is released.
Jaws Soft Hard and Reversible
Hard jaws grip rough stock. Soft jaws are bored in place to the exact diameter of the part, which both centres it and spreads the grip, and they are the usual answer for finished or delicate components.
Reversible jaws save buying two sets but are less rigid than dedicated ones. Bore soft jaws in the chuck they will be used in, at the pressure they will be used at.
Mounting Safety and Maintenance
Check the chuck mounting matches your spindle nose and that the maximum speed rating of the chuck is not below the speeds you use. Chuck speed ratings fall as jaw extension increases.
Clean and grease the scroll or wedge mechanism regularly. Most chuck accuracy complaints are swarf in the mechanism, not a worn chuck.

Questions About Three Jaw and Four Jaw Chucks When to Use Each
Which chuck should I buy first?
A three jaw self centring chuck for everyday work, then a four jaw independent chuck as soon as accuracy or non round parts appear.
How accurate is a three jaw chuck?
New chucks are supplied with a stated runout figure; used ones drift with wear. When a part must run true, dial it in a four jaw.
What are soft jaws for?
Boring to the exact part diameter so the grip is concentric and spread, which protects finished surfaces and improves accuracy.
Do power chucks need a special machine?
They need a hydraulic or pneumatic supply and a draw tube, which is standard on CNC lathes and available on some manual machines.
Why has my chuck lost accuracy?
Usually swarf or dried grease in the scroll. Strip, clean and re grease it before assuming the chuck is worn out.
