Polyester Cotton and Nylon Ribbon Differences
Three fibres, three behaviours in dyeing, printing and use. Which one to pick for a trim, a strap or a bow.
Polyester
The default decorative ribbon. Holds colour well, resists fading, takes heat transfer print and comes in the widest range of widths and finishes. Satin and grosgrain are both polyester constructions in most catalogues.
Cotton
A natural tape with an uncoated hand feel. It takes stitching and printing well and suits a natural or organic product story. It can shrink and it absorbs dye unevenly compared with polyester, so confirm a sample on the actual fibre.
Nylon
Chosen for strength rather than appearance. Nylon webbing resists abrasion and carries load, which makes it the right pick for straps, handles, lanyards and pet products. Cut ends are usually heat sealed.
Matching Colour Across Fibres
The same Pantone reference will read slightly differently on each fibre. If an order mixes fibres, match and approve each fibre separately rather than assuming one lab dip covers all three.
Printing on Ribbon
Screen print, heat transfer and hot stamping each behave differently on satin, tape and webbing. Proof the logo on the ribbon that will actually be used, especially where the ribbon will be tied or pressed.
