Classification of Polypropylene Filament

Polypropylene filament is one of the three major synthetic fibers. Density is lower than water; it is hydrophobic and chemically resistant. It is used in webbing, ropes, geotextiles, carpet backing and apparel.

Classification by fineness: fine-denier for skin-contact fabrics; coarse-denier for webbing, lifting slings, industrial ropes and geotechnical materials.

Classification by cross-section: round (general purpose) and profiled (triangular, hollow, flat) for luster, bulk or wicking.

Monofilament vs multifilament: monofilament for lines and bristles; multifilament is the main filament for webbing.

Spinning: melt-spun polypropylene is the mainstream process; film-split polypropylene is slit and drawn into tape for woven bags.

Drawing levels named on the mill note: UDY, DY, FDY, DTY and BCF. Modifications named: UV, FR, anti-static, antibacterial and high-tenacity.
