The four checks

Every problem a retractable brush creates falls into one of four areas. Check them in this order, because each one constrains the next.

• Closed length - whether the capped brush fits the kit, box or compact it will ship in.
• Mechanism - how the hair extends and retracts, and whether it has a defined stop.
• Hair grade and dome size - a retractable dome is always shorter than a fixed one.
• Print area - how much of the tube is usable for artwork once the cap overlaps it.

Closed length is the decision that kills layouts

Travel kits, amenity kits and gift boxes are designed to a fixed internal height, often before the components are chosen. A brush that is five millimeters too long forces a new box.

This is the whole reason the catalog carries both item 50010 and item 50073. They are the same idea in two lengths: 50010 for a full-size dome where height is free, 50073 when the pack height is fixed.

Mechanism: what to test on the sample

Extend and retract the sample twenty times. A mechanism that stiffens or loosens over twenty cycles will fail within a season of daily use.

Then check the stop. The hair should reach a defined travel limit rather than being pushed against the inside of the cap, which is what crushes a dome permanently.

Last, retract the brush with the hair slightly damp. Customers do this constantly, and a mechanism that binds when damp will come back as a complaint.

Finish choices and when each one is worth it

Finish is where a retractable brush earns a gift price point. The catalog covers three directions without new tooling:

• Shiny black aluminum - the neutral option, works against any packaging palette (item 50073).
• Golden aluminum ferrule with high-grade goat hair - the premium and gift finish (item 50012).
• Bronze - a warm metallic for seasonal and limited editions (item 50162).

Where the brand mark goes

On a retractable brush the tube is the brand surface, and the catalog is explicit that on these items the design and logo can be changed as per the client's request. Item 50010 is photographed with a customer's artwork printed on the tube.

Two practical notes. The cap overlaps part of the tube, so the visible print area is shorter than the tube itself. And a fine line or a small serif reproduces poorly on a curved polished surface - simplify the mark before it is printed, not after.
