Why the fiber decides the formula, not the other way round

A natural hair such as goat or pony has a scaled, irregular surface along its length. Those scales trap loose pigment between the hairs and let it go gradually as the brush moves across skin. That is exactly what a loose mineral powder needs, and it is why the goat hair kabuki is the brush that sits beside a mineral foundation on a counter.

A synthetic fiber - nylon in this catalog - is smooth along its length. It carries product on its surface rather than inside a scale structure. With a loose powder that is a disadvantage; with a cream or liquid it is the whole point, because the formula stays on the outside of the fiber where it can be deposited and then washed off.

The four fibers in this catalog and what each is for

Youmakeit's 18 catalog items use four fiber types, and each maps to a job:

• Soft goat hair - loose and pressed powder, mineral finishes, buffing. Used in items 50008, 50010, 50012, 50019, 50073 and 50162.
• High-grade soft goat hair - the softer sorted grade for direct skin contact, used in items 50052 and 50012.
• Soft nylon, often two-tone - cream, liquid and powder, and any line that has to be vegan. Used in items 50003, 50005, 50004 and the seven piece set 50018.
• Soft pony hair - short, dense heads where an edge matters, as in the disposable lip brush 50002.

Vegan claims are decided at the fiber, not at the finish

A vegan claim fails on a single component. A seven piece set that uses nylon in six brushes and goat hair in the seventh cannot be sold as vegan, and that is the most common way a brand discovers the problem - during an audit rather than during specification.

If a line has to be vegan, the decision is made before anything else: nylon hair throughout. In this catalog that means the kabuki items 50003 and 50005, the applicators 50004 and 50006, and the aluminum handled set 50018.

How to tell a well-set head from a cheap one

Fiber type is only half of it. The other half is how the head is set into the ferrule. A head that has been glued shallow will shed into the powder pan within a few uses whatever the fiber is.

Two tests take ten seconds each. Tug a small pinch of hair firmly - one or two loose hairs on a new brush is normal, a small tuft is not. Then wet the head, reshape it and let it dry; a well-set dome comes back to shape, a poorly set one dries splayed.

A short decision path

Write down the formula the brush will be sold beside first. Loose mineral or pressed powder points to goat hair. Cream, liquid or anything that has to wash out cleanly points to nylon. A vegan line points to nylon regardless of formula. A precision edge on lips points to a short dense pony hair head or a fine nylon tip.

Only then choose the body: fixed handle, pouched, retractable, or part of a set.
