How to Wash and Dry a Cosmetic Brush Without Ruining It
Most brushes that a customer describes as faulty were washed to death. A short routine printed on an insert card prevents more warranty conversations than any specification change.
The routine, in five steps
This is the sequence to print on a card, teach in a class, or put in a product listing. It works for natural and synthetic hair alike.
- Wet the hair only, under lukewarm water, with the brush pointing down.
- Work a small amount of mild soap through the hair with the fingertips - not into the ferrule.
- Rinse until the water runs clear, still hair-down.
- Press the water out with a towel and reshape the dome by hand while it is damp.
- Dry hair-down or flat over an edge, never standing upright in a cup.
Why upright drying destroys brushes
A brush stood upright to dry sends every drop of water into the ferrule. The adhesive softens, the bound hair loosens, and three months later the customer has a shedding brush and no idea why.
It is the single most valuable thing to communicate to an end customer, and it costs nothing to print.
Natural and synthetic hair need different frequencies
Synthetic hair dries faster and can be washed more often, which suits brushes used with cream and liquid formulas - items 50003, 50005 and the set 50018.
Natural goat hair used with dry powder needs washing less often. Over-washing a goat hair dome strips it and leaves the hair feeling coarse, which customers report as the brush 'going scratchy'.
Retractable brushes have one extra rule
Wash with the hair fully extended, dry fully extended, and only retract the brush when the hair is completely dry. Retracting a damp dome traps moisture inside the body, which is where a mechanism seizes.
This applies to items 50010, 50012, 50019, 50073 and 50162.
What not to do, and why
Three habits do most of the damage, and all three feel like good care at the time.
- Hot water - softens ferrule adhesive faster than anything else.
- Alcohol-based sanitiser on the hair - strips natural hair and dulls a metallic body. Reserve it for professional protocols that require it, on synthetic hair.
- Wringing the dome dry - permanently splays the shape that makes the brush work.

How often should a face brush be washed?
Often enough that product does not build in the base of the dome. A powder brush used daily is usually washed weekly; a brush used with cream or liquid needs washing more often.
Can a disposable applicator be washed and reused?
No. Items 50001, 50002, 50004 and 50006 are specified as single use and lose their tip shape once washed.
Does washing shorten the life of a good brush?
Correct washing does not. Hot water, upright drying and wringing do. The routine above is what separates the two.
