How to Measure a Shower Opening
Measure width at three heights, check plumb, then quote — in that order.
Most quoting delays are measurement delays. A supplier cannot price an enclosure from "about 1200 wide", and a framed enclosure that arrives 15 mm too wide is a returned pallet, not an adjustment.
Measure the width three times
- At tray or floor level, wall face to wall face.
- At the intended top rail height.
- Midway between the two.
Record all three numbers, not the average. The difference between them is the wall error the enclosure has to absorb, and it decides whether a standard wall profile is enough or whether an extension profile belongs in the order.
Then check plumb
Hold a spirit level against each wall that the enclosure meets. A wall leaning out by more than the profile's adjustment range cannot be corrected by the enclosure — it is corrected by packing or by re-tiling, and it is far cheaper to know that before the container ships than on installation day.
Height, tray and threshold
Measure from the finished floor or the top of the tray, whichever the enclosure will actually sit on, to the intended top of the glass. Note whether the tray has an upstand, and whether the door will swing over anything — a WC, a towel rail, a radiator.
What to send with an enquiry
- Three width measurements and the height
- Which walls are tiled and which are plasterboard
- Tray or floor-level detail, with a photo of the corner
- Quantity, and whether all units share the same opening
With that, a quote comes back against the model codes that actually fit, instead of a price list you then have to interpret.
