Why A Current Transformer Secondary Must Not Stay Open
What happens if the secondary is open
A current transformer drives a current proportional to the primary through a low-impedance burden. If that secondary circuit is opened while the primary is energised, the core is driven toward saturation and a high voltage appears on the open secondary. That voltage can break insulation and is unsafe for anyone working on the terminal.
How to check before you isolate a meter
Short the secondary terminals or close the test-block shorting link before you remove a meter or relay. Restore the burden before you take the short off. Split-core CTs used on live cables follow the same rule — close the core and land the leads before you leave the feeder.
